Traditional Bathtub

  • Alcove Placement: By definition, a traditional tub is designed to be installed in a three-walled "alcove." This setup is the most space-efficient way to include a bath in a bathroom, making it perfect for standard-sized homes.

  • Dual Functionality: These tubs are specifically designed to serve as both a bathtub and a shower base. They almost always feature a built-in flange (a lip that runs along the top edges) to allow for waterproof wall surrounds or tile to be installed over the edge, creating a watertight seal.

  • Standard Dimensions: Most traditional tubs follow industry-standard dimensions, typically 60 inches long by 30 or 32 inches wide. This uniformity makes them very easy to replace if you are performing a bathroom renovation.

  • Materials: Traditionally, these were made of enameled cast iron (extremely durable, heavy, and retains heat well) or enameled steel. Today, most modern "traditional" tubs are made of acrylic or fiberglass, which are lighter, more affordable, and easier to keep clean.
