Check Valve (The "One-Way Gate")
Primary Function: To prevent backflow, which could damage equipment like pumps or compressors, or cause contamination in a system.
How it Works: It is typically "normally closed" and relies on the pressure of the fluid moving forward to open the valve (by lifting a disc, pushing a ball, or swinging a flapper).
Common Types: Swing check, lift check, ball check, and spring-loaded check valves.
Y-Strainer (The "Filter")
Primary Function: To protect downstream equipment—such as control valves, pumps, flow meters, and steam traps—from damage caused by pipe scale, rust, sand, or welding debris.
How it Works: As fluid flows through the pipeline, it passes through a wire mesh or perforated screen housed within the "leg" of the Y-shape.
Maintenance: The screen must be cleaned periodically.
